The rules of Word of the Day
Word of the Day follows the idea of Wordle: you have 6 tries to find a 5-letter mystery word. Each guess must be a real dictionary word; if it isn't, it's rejected and costs you nothing.
After each guess, the letters change color: green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot; orange means it's in the word but elsewhere; grey means it isn't in the word. Double letters are handled like in the original, and the on-screen keyboard keeps the color of every letter you've played.
One extra compared with Wordle: a hint is shown above the grid from your very first try to point you in the right direction. Words are written without accents.
A new word every day, in English and French
The word changes every day at 9:30 a.m. Paris time. There's one word of the day in English and another in French: switch languages in one click, and the keyboard adapts (QWERTY in English, AZERTY in French).
Once you've finished the daily word, you can keep going in fun mode: random words, unlimited and off the leaderboard, with a button to skip a word that's too stubborn.
Tips to find the word in fewer tries
Open with a word that has several vowels and common consonants, such as "crane", "slate" or "raise". The point of your first guess isn't to win, it's to rule out as many letters as possible.
Read the hint before you start, then use every color: never replay a grey letter, and move orange letters to a different spot. Keep double letters in mind too, they're easy to forget. And if you're stuck with only a couple of tries left, play a word that tests several missing letters at once rather than risking a guess.
Streak, leaderboard and sharing
Every day you solve adds to your streak; a missed or failed day resets it. The daily leaderboard ranks solvers first, then those who used the fewest tries, then the fastest. The all-time leaderboard counts the days you've solved. No account needed: a nickname is enough. You can also share your grid as colored squares without giving the word away. And to play with others, NoBrainGame also has party games for friends.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the Word of the Day change?
Every day at 9:30 a.m. Paris time. If you play before 9:30, you're still on the previous day's word.
Is Word of the Day like Wordle?
Yes, the rules are the same: 5 letters, 6 tries and letters colored green, orange or grey. On top of that, a hint helps you get started, and the game is available in English and French.
Can you play more than once a day?
There's one word of the day per language, so one in English and one in French. After that, fun mode gives you unlimited words, off the leaderboard.
Do you need to type accents?
